Canadian passport ranked more powerful than the U.S.
The Canadian passport is widely recognized as one of the most powerful passports in the world, consistently ranking among the top globally and even ahead of the United States passport in several international mobility indexes. This strong ranking reflects Canada’s global reputation, diplomatic relationships, and the extensive travel freedom enjoyed by its citizens.
According to the latest Global Passport Index released by UK-based consultancy Henley & Partners, passport strength is measured primarily by global mobility — specifically, the number of destinations a passport holder can access without needing a traditional visa in advance. The index is compiled using exclusive and up-to-date data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), one of the most authoritative travel information databases in the world.
In the most recent ranking, Singapore holds the top position, as Singaporean passport holders enjoy visa-free or simplified access to 193 destinations worldwide, the highest number on the index. Canada continues to maintain a strong position near the top tier, offering its citizens exceptional travel flexibility across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and beyond.
Under the Henley methodology, passports receive equal scoring for destinations where no visa is required, as well as for destinations that allow entry through a Visa on Arrival (VOA), visitor’s permit, or Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). These simplified entry processes significantly enhance travel convenience and reduce administrative barriers.
For example, Canadian passport holders do not need a traditional visa to enter the United Kingdom. Instead, they can obtain an ETA, which allows travel for purposes such as tourism, visiting family or friends, attending business meetings, or engaging in short-term studies. Similar arrangements exist with many other countries, reinforcing the Canadian passport’s reputation for ease of travel and global access.
Overall, the strength of the Canadian passport highlights the long-term benefits of Canadian citizenship, including international mobility, business opportunities, lifestyle flexibility, and global connectivity — key factors increasingly valued by investors, professionals, and globally mobile families.
